WOW! It is 10 degrees outside the last time I checked.
One question, we get asked regularly is, 'What do the BEES do in the Winter?' WELL...they do go into a hibernation state. This type of winter is very hard for them. The hive must have a sufficient amount of BEEs in order to survive. They mainly cluster around the Queen Bee to keep her warm. They feed on a supply of honey from the hive left by the beekeeper. He leaves the two bottom hive boxes full of framed honeycomb. One year, my husband lost 5 hives in a very cold long winter....he thinks they ran out of honey. The weather and nature play a big part in successful beekeeping. It is very hard today to keep a healthy BEE hive alive. That is why you pay a little more for honey from a small local beekeeper. Beekeeping can be very costly but there is no comparison between quality and taste of FRESH RAW HONEY and honey that you purchase from the chain store supermarkets. Hopefully, our BEES are doing well....we won't know till late Winter or early Spring.
